The Railway Ministry has announced a marginal increase in passenger fares, which will come into effect from December 26. The fare revision will apply only to long-distance travel and will not impact suburban services or Monthly Season Tickets.
Under the revised fare structure, passengers travelling in Mail and Express trains, both AC and non-AC classes, will see an increase of 2 paise per kilometre. For Ordinary Class passengers, fares will increase by 1 paise per kilometre for journeys beyond 215 kilometres. Ordinary Class travel up to 215 km will remain unchanged.
As per the revised rates, a passenger travelling 500 km in a non-AC Mail or Express coach will pay ₹10 extra.
There will be no increase in suburban train fares and no change in Monthly Season Ticket (MST) fares, which account for the largest share of railway passengers. The Railway Ministry has also clarified that the fare increase is limited to longer-distance travel.
The Ministry stated that a small amount of passenger fare rationalisation is required to meet higher costs. This marks the second fare revision in the current financial year, following an earlier fare increase implemented in July.
The revised fares will apply across applicable categories of Indian Railways services from December 26.
