Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is set to make a court appearance in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, tomorrow, February 20th, 2024, in connection with a defamation case. As a result, the ongoing Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, which is currently on its 37th day, will take a brief hiatus.

Jairam Ramesh, Congress’s general secretary in-charge of communications, announced that the yatra will halt on Tuesday morning and resume from Fursatganj in Amethi at 2 pm on the same day. This decision comes following a summons issued to Rahul Gandhi to appear before the District Civil Court in Sultanpur regarding a defamation case filed by a BJP leader on August 4th, 2018.

A summons has been issued to Rahul Gandhi to appear in the District Civil Court in Sultanpur on the morning of February 20th in connection with a defamation case filed by a BJP leader on August 4th, 2018. As a result, the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra will pause on the morning of February 20th and will resume its program at 2 pm from Fursatganj in Amethi.

He further conveyed that the program for today is proceeding according to the schedule, with Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi scheduled to address a public meeting in Babuganj, Amethi, at 4 PM.

The defamation case stems from remarks made by Rahul Gandhi against Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a conference in Bengaluru back in 2018. Vijay Mishra, the then BJP district vice president, filed a complaint against Rahul Gandhi for his derogatory comments made during the Karnataka elections in Bengaluru.

Recalling the incident, Mishra mentioned that he had filed a complaint through his lawyer, and the legal proceedings had persisted for nearly five years.

Santosh Kumar Pandey, the lawyer representing Vijay Mishra, emphasized that if sufficient evidence is found against Rahul Gandhi, he could face a maximum punishment of two years. The case, filed in the District and Sessions Court of MP-MLA Court Sultanpur, has been scheduled for a hearing on February 20, 2024, with Rahul Gandhi summoned by Judge Yogesh Kumar Yadav.

The legal proceedings signify a significant development in the political landscape, with Rahul Gandhi’s court appearance attracting attention amidst the ongoing political activities. As the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra temporarily halts, all eyes will be on the outcome of the court hearing and its implications on the political narrative in Uttar Pradesh.
