A group of junior doctors met Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal on September 3, 2024, demanding his resignation over alleged police inaction in the R.G. Kar rape and murder case. As a symbolic gesture, they gifted him a replica of a human spine. The protest, led by the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front, was staged after an impasse lasting 22 hours near the Kolkata Police headquarters.

Hundreds of doctors have been protesting, calling for justice for the victim, and accusing the police of mishandling the investigation. During the meeting with the Commissioner, the doctors presented a letter detailing their demands and concerns about the violation of the crime scene and alleged evidence tampering.

Though Commissioner Goyal acknowledged some shortcomings in the investigation, he stated he would only resign if his superiors asked him to. The protesters vowed to continue their demand for justice.

15-Km Human Chain for Justice

Healthcare workers from various hospitals formed a 15-kilometre-long human chain along the EM Bypass, demanding justice for the victim. Thousands of citizens joined the chain, chanting for justice as they passed by.

The protest continues, with junior doctors calling for a symbolic candlelight vigil to be held on the night of September 4, 2024, to unite in their demand for accountability.
