
The election for the next President of India was held on July 18 in which 4,809 electors comprising MPs and MLAs voted to elect incumbent Ram Nath Kovind’s successor. President Kovind’s term ends on July 24.
The Head of State is the head of the executive and also the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces. Being the first citizen of the world’s largest democracy is not just prestigious, but the position comes with a host of perks and privileges along with inherent duties as well. The salary of the President of India is ₹ 5 lakh/month.
The president, during his/her tenure resides in the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The Rashtrapati Bhavan stands on a 330-acre estate. It has a total of 340 rooms spread over four floors, 2.5 kilometres of corridors. And 190 acres of garden area.
The primary duty of the president is to preserve, protect and defend the constitution and the law of India as made part of their oath (Article 60 of Indian constitution). Accordingly, all the shareholdings of the central government are in the name of the President or his nominees in the establishment.
All bills passed by the parliament can become laws only after receiving the assent of the president per Article 111. After a bill is presented to him, the president shall declare either that he assents to the Bill. Or that he withholds his assent from it.
The president of India also possesses appointment powers. The Head of State appoints the prime minister, members of the Council of Ministers, distributing portfolios to them on the advice of the prime minister. The Council of Ministers remains in power at the discretion of the president.
The Head of State also appoints 12 members of the Rajya Sabha. From amongst persons who have special knowledge or practical experience. Moreover, in respect of such matters as literature, science, art and social service.
Droupadi Murmu and Yashwant Sinha are currently in the run for becoming the next President of India.
If elected, Droupadi Murmu will make history as India’s 1st tribal female to hold the nation’s highest office. Thus, as Her Excellency Madam President of the Republic of India.
