A powerful earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale jolted Nepal early Tuesday morning, sending tremors across North India, including Delhi-NCR and Bihar. The quake occurred at 6:35 AM IST, with its epicenter located near the Nepal-Tibet border, about 93 kilometers northeast of Lobuche, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The tremors, which shook buildings in Kathmandu—over 200 kilometers from the epicenter—were felt in several parts of North India, spreading concern across the region. The earthquake’s depth was recorded at 10 kilometers, contributing to its widespread impact.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) confirmed the coordinates of the epicenter as latitude 28.86°N and longitude 87.51°E, placing it near Xizang in Tibet, close to Nepal.
Lobuche, located near the Khumbu Glacier and about 150 kilometers from Kathmandu, lies in a highly seismic zone. The region’s tectonic activity, driven by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates, makes it prone to frequent earthquakes.
As of now, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or damage. Authorities in Nepal and neighboring regions are closely monitoring the situation for updates.
