After all the violence which took place at the Capitol city where pro-Trump rioters stormed the building forcing the joint session of the Congress to be adjourned for a brief period the US Congress has certified Joe Biden as the 46th President of the US after counting of Electoral College votes.
“Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out, nevertheless there will be an orderly transition on January 20th,” Trump said in a statement issued by White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino.
He also added, “I have always said we would continue our fight to ensure that only legal votes were counted. While this represents the end of the greatest first term in presidential history, it’s only the beginning of our fight to Make America Great Again!”
President of the United States is not directly elected by the people but by the Electoral College which is a constitutional group of 538 members formed every four years to elect the president and the vice-president.
Though today’s exercise was meant to be a mere formality as Joe Biden had already secured minimum number of votes required in the Electoral College (270 votes) to clinch the presidency, the session was keenly watched as incumbent US President Donald Trump had refused to acknowledge the November 2020 election result.
Joe Biden, 78, and California Senator Kamala Harris, 56, will be sworn in as the President and Vice President of the country on January 20 in an inauguration that is expected to be a low-key affair amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
