Andhra Pradesh High Court has given big relief to former CM Chandrababu Naidu. The court has granted anticipatory bail to the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief in an attempt to murder case registered under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). At the same time, the former CM has approached the Supreme Court for anticipatory bail in the Fibernet case.

Former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu on Friday approached the Supreme Court against the Andhra Pradesh High Court’s order denying him anticipatory bail in the Fibernet scam case.

Earlier, on Monday, Naidu had suffered a major setback. Andhra Pradesh High Court had rejected the anticipatory bail plea of the TDP chief in three corruption cases, Inner Ring Road, Fiber Net and Angallu 307. All three cases are similar alleged corruption cases filed against Naidu by the YSRCP-led Andhra Pradesh government.

What is the Fibernet scam?

The Fibernet scam is a case of alleged manipulation of the tender process to allot the work order for Phase-1 of the Rs 330 crore AP Fibernet project to a preferred company in violation of rules. The scam allegedly occurred when Naidu held the charge of the Energy, Infrastructure and Investments portfolio.

CID made allegations against TDP chief

The CID alleged that many irregularities took place from the time of allotment of the tender till the completion of the entire project, causing huge loss to the state exchequer. While executing the project, approximately 80 percent capacity of the optic fibre cable had become unusable due to use of substandard material, violation of conditions and non-adherence to the specifications mentioned in the RFP.

Chandrababu Naidu was arrested by the Andhra Pradesh Criminal Investigation Department (CID) last month. Chandrababu is in judicial custody in the skill development case. On Wednesday, he was granted anticipatory bail by the Andhra Pradesh High Court till October 16 in the Amaravati Inner Ring Road case.
