Sarbananda Sonowal is an Indian Politician from Assam, who had been elected as the 14th CM of Assam in May 2016 from the Majuki Constituency. Up till 2011, Sonowal was a member of the Asom Gana Parishad but he later joined BJP.
From 1992 to 1999 Sonowal was the president of the All Assam Students Union.
In order of the precedence based at which the 43 ministers were sworn in on July 7, Mr. Sonowal’s name was in the second spot which could be considered as an indication of the key responsibilities that the government would now place on him.
Mr. Sonowal was born in the Dibrugarh district and was elected as an MLA from the Moran Constituency of Assam, in 2004 he was elected in the Lok Sabha from the Dibrugarh constituency.
Before being a part of the Bhartiya Janata Party, Sonawal was reassigned from all the posts held in the AGP due to discontent as the party tried to make an alliance with another party that was against the removal of the IMDT Act. Sonawal was instrumental in getting the controversial Illegal Migrants Act struck by the Supreme Court in December 2006 which had been made the deportations of illegal immigrants easier.
Sarbananda Sonowal was born on October 31, 1962, at Mulukgaon, Chabua, Assam.
Sarbananda Sonowal had been induced to the 2nd Modi Cabinet and has sworn as the Union Cabinet Minister on July 7, 2021.
