On the 40th death anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi paid heartfelt tributes, remembering her as a symbol of fearlessness, strength, and patriotism.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Rahul Gandhi shared a poignant message in Hindi, saying, “Bharat ki Indira — har taqat ke saamne nidar, dridh aur adig” (India’s Indira — fearless, resolute, and steadfast against every power).

He further wrote, “Dadi, aapne sikhaya ki Bharat ki asmita aur aatmsamman se bada kuch nahi hota. Aapka saahas, samvedna aur deshbhakti aaj bhi mere har kadam ki prerna hai” — meaning, “Grandmother, you taught us that nothing is greater than India’s identity and self-respect. Your courage, compassion, and patriotism continue to inspire my every step even today.”

The Congress leader also shared an image from Shakti Sthal, the memorial dedicated to Indira Gandhi in New Delhi, where he offered floral tributes.

Indira Gandhi, India’s first and only woman Prime Minister, was assassinated on 31 October 1984 at her official residence in New Delhi by her own bodyguards. Her assassination triggered one of the darkest chapters in India’s history, marked by widespread violence and unrest.

Today marks 41 years since her martyrdom, and leaders across party lines, as well as citizens, continue to remember her decisive leadership and lasting impact on India’s political and developmental journey.
