As per the notice issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI), Himanta Biswa Sarma has been asked to reply over his remark against the Kawardha candidate Mohammed Akbar (Congress’ candidate in Chhattisgarh Assembly Elections).
While addressing a rally in Chhattisgarh, on October 18, Himanta had said: “If one Akbar comes to one place, don’t forget that they call hundred Akbars. Therefore, bid farewell to Akbar as soon as possible, otherwise this land of Mother Kaushalya (Mother of Hindu God lord Ram) will be defiled.”

The EC has now issued a notice on the grounds of violation of Model Code of Conduct and Representation of the People Act, 1951 as part of his speech was found under “prima facie violative (The Latin expression prima facie means ‘at first sight’)” and asked him to respond by 5pm on October 30.
The Election for 90 seats in poll-bound Chhattisgarh is scheduled to be held in two phases i.e. on November 7 and 17.
On Thursday, the Election Commission of India (ECI) also issued a show-cause notice to Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra over breaching of Model Code of Conduct and Representation of People Act. The Commission received a complaint which alleged Ms Vadra, of making false statements in respect of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a public meeting of the Indian National Congress held at Dausa, Rajasthan on 20 October.
