Chhattisgarh Congress: Charandas Mahant made Leader of Opposition, Deepak Baij retains party chief post

After the formation of the government in Chhattisgarh, now Congress has also taken a big decision and announced the name of the Leader of Opposition and PCC President.

Congress has faced defeat in Chhattisgarh assembly elections. The government has been formed in the state and the new CM and Deputy CM have taken the oath of office. At the same time, Congress sitting in opposition has announced the name of the Leader of Opposition. Congress has appointed Charan Das Mahant as the Leader of Opposition of Chhattisgarh with immediate effect. Along with this, it has been decided to retain Deepak Baij as the President of the State Congress Committee.

In the press note issued by the Congress, it has been said that the party president has accepted the proposal of appointment of Charan Das Mahant as the Leader of Opposition of Chhattisgarh with immediate effect, while the proposal of Deepak Baij to remain the PCC Chief has been accepted.

Deepak Baij has lost the assembly election

Congress was claiming a big victory in Chhattisgarh. Former CM Bhupesh Baghel and other Congress leaders had claimed that the party would not only repeat power but would also win more than 75 seats, but the results declared on December 3 were completely contrary to Congress’ expectations, where Congress fell just short of the majority. In fact, many of its big leaders lost, including Deepak Baij and former Deputy CM TS Singhdev. At the same time, some ministers of the Baghel government also had to face defeat. Congress got 35 seats in this assembly elections, while BJP formed the government by winning 54 seats.

Who is Charandas Mahant? 

Charan Das Mahant is MLA from Sakti seat. He has defeated BJP’s Khilavan Sahu by 12,395 votes in the 2023 elections. A total of 14 candidates had filed nominations for this seat. Charandas Mahant has been the speaker of Chhattisgarh Assembly. Whereas during the tenure of Manmohan Singh, he had also been a minister at the Centre. He has been an MLA of the United Madhya Pradesh Assembly twice and was also made a minister once in the Congress government. He is a resident of Sargaon in Mungeli district.
