Following a day after BS Yediyurappa’s resignation as the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Basavaraj Somappa Bommai gets appointed as the new Chief Minister of the state on Tuesday.

The new Chief Minister was announced after Arun Singh, in charge of party affairs in Karnataka along with central observers, Dharmendra Pradhan and G Kishan Reddy chaired a crucial meeting in Bengaluru.

Basavaraj Somappa Bommai becomes the 30th Chief Minister of the southern state, succeeding the former Chief Minister, BS Yediyurappa. He is scheduled to swear in on Wednesday at the Raj Bhavan around 3:20 pm.

At present, he is the Minister of State for Home Affairs. Earlier, he had served as the Minister of Law and Parliamentary Affairs at Karnataka.

The new Chief Minister belongs to the Sadara Lingayat community. He is the son of SR Bommai, the former Chief Minister of Karnataka. SR Bommai served the position for a brief period in the 1980s, creating a lot of differences in Indian politics.

Basavaraj Somappa Bommai was born on 28 January 1960. On the educational front, he holds an engineering degree. By profession, he is an agriculturist and an industrialist.

He is widely acknowledged for his contributions to innumerable irrigation schemes followed by his deep knowledge on the ground of irrigation matter in Karnataka.

Basavaraj Somappa Bommai stepped into a political career through Janata Dal (United). Later in 2008, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.

After being elected, the new Chief Minister voiced, “It is a big responsibility in the given situation. I will strive to work for the welfare of the poor. It will be a pro-people and pro-poor people governance.”
