On Thursday night, a car carrying a polled EVM machine was attacked by unidentified individuals and it is been alleged that the car belongs to Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate. Well, the car was dismantled and the EC officials had to take a lift in the passing car. An FIR has been lodged against the unidentified people.

According to the source of news agency ANI, during the incident, the EVM was not tampered with when the crowd attacked and now it is under the custody of the respective administration.

This incident has given the opposition party a new chance to raise questions on the election procedure. Several Congress leaders have reacted to the incident as the EVM was allegedly carried through the car of a BJP candidate.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra tweeted, “Every time there is an election videos of private vehicles caught transporting EVM’s show up. Unsurprisingly they have the following things in common: 1.) The vehicles usually belong to BJP candidates or their associates. 2.) The videos are taken as one off incidents and dismissed as aberrations. 3.) The BJP uses its media machinery to accuse those who exposed the videos as sore losers. The fact is that too many such incidents are being reported and nothing is being done about them. The EC needs to start acting decisively on these complaints and a serious re-evaluation of the use of EVM’s needs to be carried out by all national parties.”

Another Congress leader Sushmita Dev has also reacted to this complete incidence and called it a ‘criminal act’. She said, “This is a criminal act and we demand immediate disqualification of the candidate. This is clear that the BJP is losing in Assam that is why it is using illegal means to win the elections, which is unacceptable”.

Replying back, BJP’s Member of Parliament Dilip Saikia said, “When Congress wins, the EVMs are fine. But when they lose, the EVMs are tampered. It is their old habit. We believe in the EC. We have already touched the magic number in Phase 1, 2. Phase 3 will just be a bonus for us. BJP is winning at least 90 seats,” as quoted by ANI.

The vital piece of information to be noted is that the second phase of the Assam assembly election was held on April 1, Thursday, for 39 constituencies across 13 districts. The data says that the voter turnout was 74.76% during the second phase of voting. The third phase of the assembly elections will be held on the 6th of April while the results will be announced on May 2, 2021.
