Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to launch Ujjwala 2.0, i.e., Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), by handing over LPG (liquified petroleum gas) connections at Uttar Pradesh’s Mahoba district on August 10 via video conferencing.

As per a government statement, the PM will be interacting with beneficiaries of the Ujjwala scheme during the event as well as address the nation. The 2.0 scheme will also provide the first refill and hotplate free of cost to the beneficiaries. The procedure of enrolment will require minimal paperwork.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a release that under this scheme, migrants will not be required to submit ration cards or address proof. A self-declaration for both family declaration and as proof of address will be sufficient. Ujjwala 2.0 will help achieve PM Modi’s vision of universal access to LPG.

“In the Union budget for the financial year 2021-22, provision for an additional one crore LPG connection under the PMUY scheme was announced. These one crore additional PMUY connections (under Ujjwala 2.0) aim to provide deposit-free LPG connections to those low-income families who could not be covered under the earlier phase of PMUY”, the PMO added.

Ujjwala 1.0 was expanded in April 2018 to include women beneficiaries from additional seven categories (SC/ST, PMAY, AAY, most backward classes, tea garden workers, forest dwellers, islands). A revised target of eight crore LPG connections was introduced.
