Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the government is planning to open India’s nuclear energy sector to private companies, marking a significant shift in policy as the country looks to expand participation beyond state-run entities.
According to statements shared by PTI, the Prime Minister highlighted that India has undertaken “historic reforms” in the space sector in recent years, opening it up to private players and enabling rapid growth. He noted that similar reforms are now being explored for the nuclear sector as well.
Modi said India’s space industry is witnessing strong momentum, with more than 300 space startups now contributing to innovation and new capabilities. He added that the sector has become increasingly attractive for global investors due to policy liberalisation and new opportunities for private participation.
Reiterating the government’s commitment to expanding India’s presence in high-tech strategic sectors, the Prime Minister said the success of space-sector reforms positions the country to unlock similar potential in nuclear energy by enabling private-sector involvement for the first time.
