The Smriti Van memorial, which honours human fortitude amid the horrific 2001 earthquake in Gujarat’s Kutch region, was officially opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday.

Smriti Van, according to PM Modi, is a monument to the victims and the Kutchi people’s incredible spirit of resistance.

Following the 2001 earthquake that claimed 13,000 lives and had its epicentre in Bhuj, the memorial has been constructed over about 470 acres to honour the spirit of resiliency.

The names of those who died in the earthquake are listed on the memorial. A cutting-edge Smriti Van Earthquake Museum is also present.

The museum displays the geography of Gujarat, the recovery efforts and triumphs following the earthquake in 2001, and it educates visitors about many types of disasters and how to be prepared for any type of disaster in the future.

Additionally, it features a block where visitors can use a 5D simulator to feel the experience of an earthquake, as well as another block where they can remember the victims that perished.
