After a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed requesting a probe by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the occurrence, the Chhapra hooch tragedy in Bihar reached the Supreme Court on Thursday. The PIL was filed by the Aryavarta Mahasabha Foundation, which asked for a SIT investigation as well as compensation for those died in the tragedy.

Chief Justice of India Justice DY Chandrachud, however, declined to list the case and stated that the petitioners would need to follow the correct procedures in order to list the case.

Once the winter break is over, the subject will need to be brought up once more.

Additionally, the government was asked to “formulate a national action plan to prevent the manufacturing, trading, and sale of illicit liquor,” according to the petition. It also mentioned instances where people drank spurious alcohol in states other than Bihar.

WHAT IS THE CHHAPRA HOOCH TRAGEDY?

In Bihar’s Saran district, up to 53 people have died after consuming fake liquor. The incident has sparked a major political uproar in the state, with the JD(U) and BJP attacking each other over it.

The BJP launched a scathing attack on chief minister Nitish Kumar over the tragedy, holding him accountable. It also demanded President rule in Bihar.

The leaders accuses Nitish Kumar for his remark “Jo piyega woh marega” (those who drink bogus alcohol will die), and demanded his resignation.

Meanwhile, on the second day of protests against Nitish Kumar, several BJP MLAs held banners and raised slogans against the government in the state Assembly.
