The Pakistan Army on Friday opened fire at multiple locations along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir in what appears to be a violation of the existing ceasefire agreement. According to officials, the Indian Army responded promptly and effectively to the small arms firing initiated by Pakistani troops. No casualties have been reported so far.

“There were incidents of small arms firing at some places on the Line of Control initiated by Pakistan. The firing was effectively responded to,” sources quoted by PTI stated. Further details are still being gathered.

The incident took place just hours ahead of Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi’s visit to Srinagar and Udhampur. The Army Chief is expected to assess the current security scenario and review the ceasefire violations by the Pakistan Army with senior commanders in the Kashmir Valley.

India’s strong response after Pahalgam terror attack

The firing follows rising tensions between the two countries in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives. India has blamed cross-border terror elements and responded with a series of diplomatic and strategic countermeasures.

Key actions taken by India include:

  • Suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, pending permanent cessation of terror support from Pakistan.

  • Shutdown of the Integrated Check Post at Attari.

  • Revocation of the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme for Pakistani nationals, giving them 48 hours to leave India.

  • Expulsion of Pakistani High Commission officials, declaring several as persona non grata.

In response, Pakistan has rejected the Indus Waters Treaty suspension and warned that any obstruction of its water share under the treaty would be viewed as an “act of war.”

The Indus Waters Treaty, brokered by the World Bank in 1960, remains one of the longest-standing water-sharing agreements between the two countries. The latest developments, however, have pushed both nations into a deepening diplomatic and military standoff.
