
Odisha Health Minister Naba Das died from his injuries after being fired at by a police officer during an event in Jharsuguda district on Sunday.
An assistant sub-inspector of police in Jharsuguda district fired at Naba Kishore Das. Das was shot in the chest and was brought to the hospital for treatment. On Sunday, he died at the Apollo Hospital in Bhubaneswar.
What happened?
When Naba Das came out of his car at Gandhi Square, an officer fired at least four to five rounds. The event occurred in the district’s Brajrajnagar town as the minister was on his way to a meeting. Locals apprehended the offender, identified as ASI Gopal Das, and turned him over to police.
Das was seen bleeding from a gunshot wound as bystanders attempted to carry him in a video.
Naba Das succumbs to injuries
The Apollo hospital announced in a statement that the Odisha health minister, who was hospitalised with gunshot wounds to his left chest, died on Sunday.
“Health Minister Naba Das was admitted to Apollo with gunshot wounds to the left chest. A team of doctors led by Dr Debashish Nayak immediately attended to and operated on him. On operation, it was found that a single bullet had entered and exited the body, injuring the heart and left lung and causing massive internal bleeding and injury. The injuries were repaired, and steps were taken to improve the pumping of the heart. He was given urgent ICU care. But despite best efforts, he could not be revived and succumbed to his injuries,” the statement read.
Odisha CM condoles on demise of Naba Das
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed his dismay over the death of state health minister Naba Das.
“I am shocked and distressed. He was an asset to the government and the party,” CM Naveen Patnaik said on Sunday.
