There is no ban on imports. Companies and traders can import IT hardware, laptops, tablets, etc. said a senior official, a day after the ministry notified import curbs.

The government announced in a notification on Thursday that it will immediately impose limitations on the importation of laptops, tablets, and personal computers that come under the HSN 8741 category.

The license required for such imports will be granted within 5 minutes, according to the secretary of the ministry of electronics and information technology, as the DGFT license portal is already operational and will be valid for a year.

According to the representative, two businesses have already requested import licenses. He even made it clear that a single business may seek for several licenses.

“There won’t be any price increases for these products, including laptops, tablets, and personal computers, and there won’t be any delays for goods in transit.”

This restriction has nothing to do with the purportedly low adoption of PLI 2.0. He noted that 44 businesses, including HP, have already signed up for PLI 2.0 schemes.
