The Navi Mumbai Police have registered an FIR against a social media user for allegedly creating and sharing an objectionable video of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Bhushan Gavai, aiming to hurt the sentiments of people belonging to the Scheduled Caste community, NDTV reported.

What Happened in Courtroom

A major security breach took place in the Supreme Court on Monday when an elderly lawyer threw a shoe at CJI Bhushan Gavai during a court proceeding. The shoe, however, did not reach the bench, and the lawyer was immediately escorted out by security personnel.

Eyewitnesses said the Chief Justice remained calm throughout the incident and urged court officials not to get distracted. “I am the last person to be affected by such things,” he reportedly said, continuing with the hearing unfazed.

How the Country Reacted

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack, describing it as “utterly condemnable” and “against the spirit of India’s constitutional and cultural values.” He said during a phone call with the CJI, “The attack on him earlier today in the Supreme Court premises has angered every Indian. There is no place for such reprehensible acts in our society.

The Prime Minister also praised CJI Gavai’s composure and commitment to justice, saying it demonstrated his deep respect for constitutional principles.

Political parties across the spectrum, including the BJP and Congress, also strongly condemned the incident. BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi said the act “has hurt every Indian and goes against our social and constitutional traditions.

A day after the incident, Rakesh Kishore, the lawyer who threw the shoe, made a bizarre claim, saying he acted on “divine instructions.” He alleged that the CJI had mocked Sanatan Dharma and called his act a “reaction to an action.”

Police have since tightened security in and around the Supreme Court premises as investigations continue.
