A massive illegal hoarding measuring 120×120 feet collapsed in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar area during a fierce dust storm on May 13, 2024. The hoarding, which was erected illegally on railway land despite previous warnings, came crashing down near a petrol pump in Sector 3 around 4:30 pm.
With the latest update on the news, at least 51 people have been reported injured so far, with several more still feared trapped under the debris. Rescue operations by the Mumbai Fire Brigade, police and emergency services are ongoing at the site, but hampered by the dust storm.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has confirmed the billboard violated safety norms. While 51 injured have been rushed to a nearby hospital, authorities fear the casualty toll could rise as more people remain trapped. An investigation has been launched into the negligence and circumstances leading to the tragedy. BMC has also confirmed filing an FIR against the agency responsible for the illegal hoarding.
