The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted strong thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rain for Wednesday evening in many Maharashtra districts, including Mumbai, Palghar and Satara. Gusty winds of 40-50 kmph are expected to hit remote areas in the coming hours, the agency cautioned in its bulletin.
In a post, BMC said, “The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for Mumbai, till tomorrow morning 8.30am. In view of this, all schools and colleges in Mumbai have been declared a holiday for tomorrow Thursday, 26 September 2024, in consideration of the safety of students. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) administration requests Mumbaikars to step out of homes only if required.”
The bad weather has already affected the flight operations at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Two flights, including one from IndiGo, were diverted to Ahmedabad after conducting a go-around in the airspace for landing permission due to bad weather. Seven flights from various airlines waited in the airspace doing a go-around before getting landing clearance. 14 Mumbai-bound flights were diverted to other airports till 9:56 p.m. due to rain.
