Mumbai and its neighboring regions are witnessing intense rainfall today, leading the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to upgrade its weather warning. The city, along with Palghar, Thane, and Raigad (including Navi Mumbai), has been placed under a ‘Red Alert’ after being under an ‘Orange Alert’ earlier.
According to the IMD’s latest nowcast update, the red alert remains in force for Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad (Navi Mumbai) till 11:15 am on Monday. The alert signifies the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall, localized flooding, waterlogging, and traffic disruptions.
Impact on Mumbai and Neighboring Regions
Heavy downpour has already led to:
-
Waterlogging in several low-lying areas of Mumbai.
-
Slower traffic movement on major roads.
-
Delays in suburban train services.
What Red Alert Means
A red alert is the highest warning issued by IMD, urging authorities and citizens to take immediate action to prevent loss of life and property. It indicates that the region could experience very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall (more than 204 mm in 24 hours).
