The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a nowcast warning for Mumbai and surrounding districts, predicting thunderstorms with lightning and light to moderate rain. Gusty winds, reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph, are expected in parts of Mumbai City and Mumbai Suburbs over the next 3-4 hours.
The IMD has also issued alerts for several districts including Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. Other areas such as Dhule, Nandurbar, Nasik, Pune, and Kolhapur are also on alert for similar weather conditions.
The weather department advises people in these regions to avoid staying outdoors during lightning, especially in open spaces. They have also cautioned against seeking shelter under trees during thunderstorms.
In addition, the IMD has warned farmers to avoid irrigation during this period, harvest matured crops, and provide support to young plants to prevent damage.
This weather alert follows heavy rains in Mumbai on October 10, which caused waterlogging and traffic disruptions in the city. The rains also hampered Navratri festivities, affecting plans for the traditional ‘garba’ dance.
