In a recent letter addressed to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Member of Parliament B. Manickam Tagore from Tamil Nadu highlighted the severe shortage of lower denomination currency notes—specifically Rs. 10, 20, and 50. Tagore emphasized the immense difficulties caused by this shortage, particularly in rural areas and urban poor communities, where cash transactions are essential for daily business, especially among small vendors and daily wage workers.
Tagore urged immediate intervention to direct the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to resume printing and distributing these notes, stressing that this shortage has disproportionately impacted those without access to digital payment systems. Additionally, he called for improved access to digital payment infrastructure in rural areas to address the digital divide.
