After a notice was served by the Central Bureau of Investigation to TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee’s sister-in-law Menaka Gambhir, a team consisting of two women officers had been sent to her residence on Tuesday last week to examine her in relation to the Coal Theft Case.

Rujira Banerjee, Gambhir’s sister and MP Abhishek’s wife had given the CBI team an appointment regarding their examination notice on February 23 at her residence on Harish Mukherjee Road between 11 am to 3 pm.

This case could turn out to have major repercussions since so many important political and power figures are involved directly or indirectly. Managers Amit Kumar Dhar and Jayesh Chandra Rai, along with ECL Chief of Security Tanmay Das, Area Security Inspector Kunustoria Dhananjay Rai, and SSI of Kajor Debashish Mukherjee had last year been named in an FIR registered by the CBI which also included major crime lord Manjhi (also known as Lala) in the alleged coal theft case.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has alleged that these recent events are an effort by the BJP to damage the reputation of TMC officials as the state prepares for the forthcoming State Assembly Elections.

Soon after the CBI has served the notice, an angered Mamata had said, “don’t try to intimidate us with jail; we have fought against guns and are not afraid of fighting against rats.”
