The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) has taken a firm stand against the spread of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) on social media platforms. Notices have been sent to X, Youtube, and Telegram, demanding immediate action to ensure that no such content exists on their platforms.

The Union Minister of State for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship and Electronics & IT stated, “We have sent notices to X, Youtube and Telegram to ensure there are no Child Sexual Abuse Material that exist on their platforms. The Government is determined to build a safe and trusted internet under the IT rules.”

The IT rules under the IT Act lay down strict expectations from social media intermediaries. They are expected not to allow criminal or harmful posts on their platforms. The Minister warned that if these platforms do not act swiftly, their safe harbour under section 79 of the IT Act would be withdrawn.

“The consequences under Indian law will follow,” added the Minister, highlighting the government’s commitment to creating a safer online environment for all users. This move by MEITY underscores the government’s determination to crack down on illegal activities online and ensure the safety of internet users across the country. It sends a clear message to all social media intermediaries about their responsibilities and obligations under the IT Act.
