West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has made a powerful statement, declaring her readiness to resign from her position if necessary, as she focuses on securing justice for the doctor who was brutally murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. This declaration comes after the worldwide outrage surrounding the rape and murder case of the Kolkata doctor, a case that remains unresolved as justice is still pending.
For the people’s sake, I’m willing to resign; I also seek justice for the murdered RG Kar hospital doctor: WB CM Mamata Banerjee.
In a press conference held in Kolkata, Banerjee expressed her frustration over the ongoing protests by junior doctors, stating, “I am still saying that I will not take any action against them for not coming and making us wait for two hours. I will forgive them because being elders, it is our responsibility to forgive our younger ones.”
She emphasized her commitment to justice, asserting, “I am ready to resign from the Chief Minister of West Bengal. I am not concerned about the post. I want justice; I am only concerned about justice being served.”
Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case: CM on Doctor’s Demand for Live Streaming
Banerjee also addressed the demands made by the junior doctors involved in the protest. They had refused to meet with the government unless the meeting was live-streamed, citing transparency concerns. The Chief Minister explained that, as the RG Kar case is sub-judice, the meeting could not be live-streamed as per their request. “We had arrangements to video record the meeting with junior doctors, and we could have shared that with them with the Supreme Court’s permission,” she stated.
Despite attempts to engage in dialogue, the junior doctors remained firm in their stance, demanding live streaming as a precondition for further discussions.
‘I Tried Thrice to Hold Talks with Junior Doctors,’ Says Mamata Banerjee
Banerjee went on to detail her repeated efforts to resolve the impasse. “I tried thrice to hold talks with junior doctors to end the RG Kar stalemate. I waited for two hours for the last two days, but they did not show up,” she said, reiterating her stance of not taking punitive actions against the protesting doctors, choosing instead to extend forgiveness.
Government’s Efforts to Resolve the Crisis
West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant also addressed the issue, explaining the government’s efforts to meet the demands of the doctors. “We have tried our best to make them understand. We have explained to them what all arrangements have been made. We have made recording arrangements so that the entire proceedings are well documented. There should be trust between the two parties,” Pant remarked.
He added that the government’s objective aligns with that of the doctors and urged for cooperation, saying, “There is no conflict situation. Both of us are working with the same objective.”
High Court Sets Deadline for CBI Report
Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court has ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to submit a progress report on their investigation into the RG Kar Medical College doctor’s death by September 17. The doctor, a trainee, was found dead in the seminar hall of the hospital on August 9, 2024. Her death has sparked widespread protests and raised serious concerns about safety and justice within the medical community.
