In the state cabinet enlargement, Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra Ajit Pawar received the Finance ministry, while NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal received the Food and Civil Supply post. Twelve days after nine NCP MLAs, including Ajit Pawar, were sworn in as ministers in the current Eknath Shinde-Devendra Fadnavis government, the cabinet has been expanded

The current government in Maharashtra is a complex alliance of the BJP, NCP and the Eknath Shinde faction of the Shiv Sena.

The opposition leaders have accused the ruling party and the MLAs who have shifted loyalties of foul play. The opposition has hinted that monetary incentives are the reason for the sudden shift while the MLAs have maintained that ideological reasons are the cause of their switch of parties.

The Supreme Court issued a notice today in response to a petition by the Shiv Sena group led by Uddhav Thackeray asking the court to order Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Rahul Narwekar to quickly rule on the disqualification cases pending against dissident MLAs led by Eknath Shinde. The SC has requested a response to the petition within two weeks, according to ANI.
