Former Punjab chief minister and Congress candidate Charanjit Singh Channi extended his lead over BJP’s Sushil Kumar Rinku, emerging as the winner from the crucial Jalandhar Lok Sabha constituency.
Jalandhar, an important urban center in Punjab known for its educational institutions, sports culture, and industrial development, played a pivotal role in the state’s political landscape during these elections.
The Jalandhar seat witnessed a four-way battle, with candidates from major parties like the Indian National Congress (INC), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) contesting independently on all 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab.
Channi’s victory underscores the Congress party’s continued dominance in the region and its ability to garner support from the significant scheduled caste population, which constitutes around 37 percent of the constituency’s eligible voters.
The Jalandhar Lok Sabha area encompasses nine assembly segments, including Phillaur (SC), Nakodar, Shahkot, Kartarpur (SC), Jalandhar West (SC), Jalandhar Central, Jalandhar North, Jalandhar Cantt, and Adampur (SC), with a total of around 16.5 lakh eligible voters.
