Residents across Kolkata felt mild tremors on Friday morning after a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Narsingdi, Bangladesh, at 10:08 AM (UTC+05:30), according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The quake’s epicentre — located around 14 km WSW of Narsingdi at a depth of 10 km — sent light but noticeable vibrations across several parts of the city, including Sealdah, Park Circus, Salt Lake, Tollygunge and parts of central Kolkata.
The tremors lasted only a few seconds, but were strong enough for people in high-rises and office buildings to feel seats and furniture shaking.
A resident from the Sealdah area said, “My dog suddenly started barking and my husband felt his chair move. At first we thought it was dizziness, but neighbours confirmed they felt it too.”
Another resident from a multistorey housing complex said, “We did not know how to react for that moment. It was a brief tremor, but enough to scare everyone.”
Many office-goers reportedly stepped out of buildings as a precaution, while several others took to social media to check if others had experienced the same.
So far, no casualties or structural damage have been reported in Kolkata. Authorities are monitoring updates from seismic agencies, and further details are awaited.
