President Droupadi Murmu has expressed deep outrage over the horrific rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The incident, which occurred on August 9, has sparked widespread protests across the nation, with many demanding justice and increased safety for healthcare workers.
Speaking for the first time on the matter, President Murmu said she was “dismayed and horrified” by the tragic event and declared that “enough is enough.” In an article shared with a news agency, she emphasized that no civilized society can tolerate such atrocities against its daughters and sisters. “The nation is bound to be outraged, and so am I,” she stated.
The President condemned the “deplorable mindset” that views women as lesser beings, stressing that this attitude is at the root of many crimes against women. She pointed out that the objectification of women is deeply ingrained in some segments of society, and that both the State and society must work together to combat this mentality.
Recalling the Nirbhaya gang rape incident, President Murmu lamented the collective amnesia that often allows such heinous acts to fade from public memory. She urged the nation to wake up to the ongoing “perversion” of crimes against women, calling for honest self-reflection and a commitment to addressing these deep-seated issues.
“The time has come not only to face history squarely but also to search within our souls and probe the pathology of crimes against women,” the President said. She emphasized the need for society to ask difficult questions about where it has gone wrong and what can be done to correct these errors. “Without finding out the answer to that question, half of our population cannot live as freely as the other half,” she concluded.
