The 49th Chief Justice of India, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, took the oath of office on Saturday. At a ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan at 10.30 AM today, President Droupadi Murmu administered him the oath.

One day after Justice N V Ramana, the previous justice, resigned from the position, Justice Lalit takes over.

Justice Lalit, who was born on November 9th, 1957, registered as an advocate in June 1983 and worked in the Bombay High Court until December 1985.

In January 1986, he moved his practise to Delhi, and the Supreme Court named him a senior advocate in April 2004.

He was chosen to serve as the CBI’s special public prosecutor for the 2G spectrum allocation case.

Justice Lalit has contributed to several historic rulings in his capacity as a Supreme Court justice and will preside over numerous significant cases during his tenure.

As judges are required to retire by the age of 65, Justice Lalit will have to do so on November 8, 2022. He will turn 65 in November.
