A Delhi court has remanded freelance journalist Rajeev Sharma and his alleged accomplices, a Chinese woman and a Nepalese man into seven-day police custody in an Official Secret Act case. He was arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police on September 14 for passing sensitive information to Chinese intelligence.
“He was found to be in possession of some defence-related classified documents,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav said. It is also alleged that he passed on the classified information to his associates for huge amounts of money. His laptop, mobile phone were seized and are being scanned for details. He also runs a YouTube channel called “Rajeev Kishkindha”, which has tens of thousands of followers.
The Press Club of India criticized Delhi Police for arresting Sharma who is a “well-known independent journalist of long standing” and said that this action was “high-handed” and “mind-boggling”. The club also questioned the “dubious record” of Delhi police.
