The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) panel has proposed to replace “India” with “Bharat” in all NCERT textbooks. This proposal has been sent by the consensus of all the members of the panel. If this proposal is accepted, then the change will be visible in the next set of NCERT books.

“NCERT panel recommends replacing ‘India’ with ‘Bharat’ in school textbooks,” says Committee chairman C I Issac.

This recommendation has been made by NCERT when the issue of India versus Bharat is heated in the political circles. Apart from changing the name, the NCERT panel has also sent a proposal to approve teaching the victory of Hindu kings in the books.

This entire controversy arose when ‘President of Bharat’ was seen written instead of ‘President of India’ on the invitation letter for the G-20 banquet sent by the President Draupadi Murmu. After this, the opposition raised this issue loudly.

The name of our country is defined in Article 1(1) of the Constitution as “India, that is, Bharat shall be a Union of States”.

Over this recommendation by NCERT, the opposition party Congress has got another chance to attack the BJP government at Centre. Congress leader and Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, DK Shivakumar has raised objection over replacing India with Bharat in all NCERT school textbooks.

As quoted by ANI, DK Shivakumar said: “Why are we saying the Reserve Bank of India, Indian Administrative Service and Indian Foreign Service? In our passports, we have the Republic of India. I think something wrong has happened to this government. Why are they confusing the minds of Indians?”

“Whatever stand they have taken is completely anti-people, anti-India, and anti-Bharat. I am telling you, they (NCERT) have been forced by the NDA government. This is completely wrong. You can’t change the history of India. Karnataka will continue with whatever there was earlier,” added Shivakumar.
