India is set to elect its next Vice President on September 9, 2025, the Election Commission announced on Friday. The election follows the unexpected resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, creating a sudden vacancy in the second-highest constitutional office in the country.
As per constitutional provisions, the vacancy must be filled within 60 days, setting September 19 as the deadline. Voting and counting will both take place on September 9, from 10 AM to 5 PM.

The election will be held in accordance with Articles 63 to 71 of the Constitution and the Vice-President (Election) Rules, 1974. The Vice President is chosen by an electoral college consisting of members of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, through a secret ballot and single transferable vote system.

The newly elected Vice President will hold office for a full five-year term from the date of assuming charge.
