During his one-day trip to Gujarat on Saturday, Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu paid a visit to Mahatma Gandhi’s birthplace in Porbandar and offered prayers at two temples in Dwarka.

On the day that voting is taking place to choose the next vice president, he travels to Gujarat.

At Jamnagar Air Force Station, Governor Acharya Devvrat and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel welcomed the departing vice president and his wife Usha Naidu. The Naidus then travelled to Dwarka, where they visited the Dwarkadhish and Nageshwar Jyotirling temples to worship.

After that, they travelled to Porbandar to see Gandhi’s family home as well as the memorial “Kirti Mandir,” which is close by.

He was welcomed with a traditional performance in Porbandar. He was welcomed by local BJP leaders who gave him traditional headgear to wear.

Naidu urged people to visit the site and be inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s life and principles in his message entered in the Kirti Mandir’s visitor’s book.

“I am very honoured and privileged to visit the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi. By showing the world the power of truth and non-violence as weapons of struggle against injustice, Gandhiji left a lasting impact on humanity. I urge everyone, especially the young generation to visit this place and take inspiration from Gandhiji’s life and ideals,” he wrote in the visitor’s book at the museum at Gandhi’s birthplace.

Pictures of Naidu visiting the two temples were also posted on the vice president’s official Twitter account.

Former West Bengal governor and NDA contender Jagdeep Dhankhar, age 71, is competing against joint opposition candidate Margaret Alva for the position of vice president (80).

Dhankhar has a significant advantage over his challenger because the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has an absolute majority in the Lok Sabha and 91 members in the Rajya Sabha. Since the current vice president’s term ends on August 10, he is most likely to succeed him.
