The central government has proposed halting the three controversial farm laws for a year and a half to come to a solution together. The farmers union has said that they will consider the offer. This will be conveyed to the Supreme Court in the form of an affidavit, farmers who were present for the 10th round of negotiations told NDTV. The government has become discouraged by their plan to hold a tractor rally on Republic Day.
Balkishan Singh Brar of All India Kisan Sabha, said, “The government placed a new proposal before us in the tenth round meeting – it is reading to set up a special committee which will consider all our demands along with the three new laws.” He continued to say, “The government also proposed that until the committee completes the review, all three new laws will be put on hold for one-and-a-half-year.”
Last week it was announced through an order that the farm bills were placed on hold for at least two months. A special committee was created to debate the issue and coordinate with both sides, giving them two months to submit a report.
The farmers did not accept this committee as apparently, all four members were pro-government, not giving them a fighting chance. One of the members stepped down.
Mr Brar said, “The government is scared and is looking for ways to save its skin.” Quoting him, the farmers will meet the police tomorrow, 21st January 2021 to talk over the program for the 26th January rally. The farmers are likely to expect at least 1,000 tractors to be part of the protest which will drive along with the parameter of the city.
The government has made its sentiment clear by saying that such a rally would embarrass the nation.
Although an appeal has been made by the government, the Supreme Court has declined to take a stand on the tractor rally, saying that the Delhi Police must decide independently.
The 11th meeting between the government and farmers will take place on 22nd January 2021.
