A chain collision involving four Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) buses triggered chaos on Mumbai roads on Thursday, raising fresh concerns over public transport safety in the financial capital. Officials said a bus conductor was injured in the incident, while commuters faced major disruption following the crash.
According to preliminary information, the accident involved four BEST buses colliding one after another, leading to traffic congestion and panic among passengers and pedestrians in the surrounding area. Emergency teams and local police personnel rushed to the spot soon after the incident was reported.
The injured conductor was provided medical assistance and shifted for treatment, officials said. No passenger fatalities were immediately reported, though authorities are continuing to assess the extent of injuries and damage caused by the collision.
The exact cause of the accident has not yet been officially confirmed. Transport authorities are expected to examine whether sudden braking, technical failure, driver error or road congestion contributed to the crash. BEST officials have reportedly initiated an internal inquiry into the incident.
The latest collision comes at a time when Mumbai’s public transport system is already facing intense scrutiny over operational safety and management concerns. In recent months, several serious accidents involving BEST buses have sparked debate over driver training, maintenance standards and the rapid expansion of electric bus operations in the city.
Earlier this year, a Mumbai court denied bail to a BEST bus driver involved in a fatal Bhandup crash that killed four people and injured several others, observing that the incident was not a “casual accident.” Investigations in multiple past cases have pointed towards possible human error and inadequate practical training for drivers operating electric buses.
BEST, which operates one of India’s largest urban bus networks, remains a critical part of Mumbai’s daily transport system, serving lakhs of commuters across the city and neighbouring regions. However, recurring accidents and operational challenges have increasingly intensified public concern over commuter safety and traffic management.
Authorities said further details regarding the accident, including possible disciplinary or corrective measures, would be released after completion of the preliminary investigation.
