A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck Assam at 4:41 PM on Sunday, with the epicentre located near Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur district, sending powerful tremors across the Northeast.
The quake shook Guwahati city, where residents rushed outdoors as buildings swayed. But the impact wasn’t confined to Assam — tremors were also strongly felt in Bhutan and parts of North Bengal, including districts like Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and Jalpaiguri.
In North Bengal, residents reported ceiling fans and household items rattling for several seconds. Many ran out into open spaces, recalling the frequent seismic activity in the Himalayan foothill region. Authorities have not reported immediate damage, but people have been urged to remain cautious of potential aftershocks.
The Northeast and adjoining Himalayan belt, including North Bengal, fall under one of India’s most active seismic zones, making the region prone to moderate and strong earthquakes.
Disaster management teams in Assam and West Bengal are closely monitoring the situation, with local administrations keeping hospitals and emergency services on alert.
