Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and a number of MPs, including Shashi Tharoor, were held by police at Vijay Chowk in New Delhi amid widespread protests against rising prices and unemployment, according to news agency ANI.

The Gandhis and other party members were seen conducting rallies inside the Parliament buildings just before Rahul Gandhi was arrested.

In a video the party tweeted, Sonia Gandhi, the interim president of the Congress, was shown standing in parliament while her colleagues shouted criticisms of the government and the GST (Goods and Services Tax) on food. Images showed Rahul Gandhi in charge of a march to the White House.

Alleging that some MPs at protest were beaten by the police, Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi said, “All Congress MPs were marching towards Rashtrapati Bhawan to raise the issue of inflation & price rise but they are not allowing us to go ahead from here. Our job is to raise the issues of the people…Some MPs detained, also beaten.”

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi unleashed a fierce attack on the Modi administration during the conference that was held on Friday. He asserted that India is currently experiencing the “onset of dictatorship” as a result of the way the Center has unleashed its agencies against the opposition.

Referring to PM Modi as “Hitler” Rahul Gandhi said: “Hitler had also won elections, he too used to win elections. How did he use to do it? He had control of all of Germany’s institutions…Give me the entire system, and then I will show you how elections are won.”

Workers and officials from the Congress started a nationwide protest against unemployment, rising costs, and rises in the GST on essential commodities on Friday.
