Droupadi Murmu has created history and become the first tribal woman to hold the highest office in India. She will now act as the nominal head of the executive as well as the commander-in-chief of the Indian Armed Forces.

Within India, she will be known as Rāṣṭrapati‍ Mahodaya or Hon’ble President. Whereas abroad, she will be treated as Her Excellency Madam President of India. Moreover, in the commonwealth she will be known as The Honourable Madam President of India.

President Droupadi Murmu, the candidate of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led NDA. The 64-year-old former teacher comes from Odisha (Orissa) state. And has held office previously as a state governor. She was elected by the members of both the houses of parliament and of the legislative assemblies of states and federally-administered union territories.

President Murmu started out as a government clerk, and was a schoolteacher before becoming a councillor in Rairangpur. She became MLA twice and also a minister. She was appointed Governor of Jharkhand in 2015.

The voting took place on July 18 and was completed in a peaceful manner. Murmu will now take the oath on 25th July, the day after incumbent President Ram Nath Kovind’s tenure ends.

Since before the polls began, Droupadi Murmu was said to have a more clearer path towards winning the election because of the fact that several non-NDA parties also openly announced support for the candidature of the BJP leader.
