Doda Bus Accident: PM Modi announces ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh as 38 died, 17 injured

Police said that initial information has revealed that three buses were running together on this route and, in the race to overtake each other, this major accident occurred.

A major road accident has taken place in Doda district of Jammu division. Around 12 noon on Wednesday, a bus went out of control in Trangal of Baggar area of Doda district and fell into a ditch of about 300 feet deep. The accident was so severe that 36 people died and many were injured. The bus was going from Kishtwar towards Jammu. There were about 55 passengers in it.

The death toll has reached 38, while treatment of 17 others is going on.

According to the information, 56 people were travelling in the bus with bus registration number JK02CN-6555. This bus was going from Kishtwar to Jammu. The bus lost control and fell into a 300 feet gorge near Trungal-Assar on the Batote-Kishtwar National Highway.

Police said that initial information has revealed that three buses were running together on this route and, in the race to overtake each other, this major accident occurred. The police is investigating the matter.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his grief over this deadly accident and has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 for injured.

In a statement, the Prime Minister’s Office said: “The bus accident in Doda, Jammu and Kashmir is distressing. My condolences to the families who have lost their near and dear ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. Rs. 50,000 would be given to the injured.”

Doda district administration has also expressed deep sorrow over the accident. To avoid rumours and provide accurate information and assistance, numbers have been released. The administration said that people can contact these numbers whose loved ones are lost their life.

Four people badly injured in the accident were airlifted to GMC Jammu. Even among these, two people could not be saved. In this situation, the death toll has reached 38. Principal GMC Ashutosh Gupta said that four people were airlifted here. A little girl is stable and is being shifted to the ICU. His operation will be done on Thursday.
