According to the Delhi Traffic Police, the Union Territory has issued nearly 1.6 lakhs challans till October 15 this year to vehicle owners driving without Pollution Under Control Certificates (PUCC), reported by news agency PTI. The strictness grew over the deteriorating air quality of Delhi amidst all the pollution followed by the introduction of the Delhi Motor Vehicle Premium Bus Aggregator Scheme 2023 by CM Arvind Kejriwal.

As per the report, a total of 81,246 challans were issued in 2019, 69,199 in 2020, 1,04,369 in 2021 and 1,31,799 in 2022. Area with Maximum no. of challans is Daryaganj Circle (6,306), followed by Sarita Vihar (6,254), Rajouri Garden (5,595), Shahdara (5,442) and Tilak Nagar (5,252), the data showed. Issuing most of the challans to motorcycle riders (69,190), followed by scooter riders (49,219), car drivers (33,754) and autorickshaw drivers (1,556), data added.

2019 And 2020 shows fewer digits due to restriction made by the widespread Coronavirus.

Measures taken by Delhi Traffic Police

Enforcement of directions issued by the Supreme Court, Delhi High Court, National Green Tribunal, Commission for Air Quality Management, Central Pollution Control Board, Environment Department/Delhi Pollution Control Committee and Delhi government are the various steps taken by the authorities of the National capital.

Implementation of a fine of up to ₹ 10,000 for vehicles plying without valid PUCC followed by the disqualification of licence for three months for the first offence.

The reason behind the measures is to curb with growing population and pollution hand in hand, allowing only those vehicles on the roads that are following emission norms as regulated by the central government.
