Congress leader, Rahul Gandhi has now received his official government bungalow back on Tuesday, 8th August after he was reinstated as a Member of Parliament from Wayanad on the following Monday. The house committee of the Lok Sabha has reportedly allotted Gandhi his old bungalow. Rahul Gandhi happened to be residing in the same 12, Tughlaq Lane bungalow in the national capital since 2005 till he was asked to vacate it following his conviction in the Modi defamation case recently.

Gandhi sighed a sign of relief at the news of his old bungalow being reallotted to him and said, “Mera ghar poora Hindustan hai (Whole of India is my home)”. Rahul Gandhi has now been reappointed as a Member of Parliament following the Issuance of a new order by the Lok Sabha secretariat. This new order effectively cancels out the previous one which had resulted in Gandhi being disqualified from his parliamentary role due to his conviction in the infamous ‘Modi surname’ case. These events followed after the Supreme Court granted relief to Gandhi on Friday by temporarily halting his conviction via an interim order. The initial notification by the Court had been released on March 24th ,which was a day subsequent to Gandhi’s conviction by a Surat court in Gujarat. This conviction was a result of a criminal defamation case filed against him whose roots could be traced back to 2019.

Gandhi had therefore left his residence after almost a month of receiving a two-year sentence from the court, which was on April 22. When a lawmaker is sentenced for two years or more, it results in an automatic disqualification. After disqualification, MPs are permitted to keep their official residences for a maximum of one month.
