The Union Government has moved to exclude the Chief Justice of India as a member of the selection committee set up to choose Chief and other members of Election Commission of India.
As per reports, the Supreme Court judgement had held that its judgement including the CJI in the selection committee will be applicable until the centre adopts a law.
The government has moved to do just that. Two votes out of three will be given to the Prime minister and his Cabinet Minister.
It’s also being reported that now the qualification for being an Election Commissioner will be a person who is or has held a post equivalent to the Secretary to the Government of India.
The spirit of the Supreme Court’s judgment, which calls for an independent electoral commission, is not only being defeated by this bill, but it’s also giving the party in power complete control over the constitutional body.
