In a significant development in the decades-old Rubaiya Sayeed kidnapping case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday took into custody Shafat Ahmad Shangloo, a former Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) activist from Srinagar.
Shangloo, a resident of Ishber Nishat, was first summoned to a local police station before being taken away by CBI officials, according to sources. It remains unclear whether he has been formally arrested or detained for questioning as part of the ongoing probe.
Part of ongoing trial in TADA court
The CBI action comes as the trial in the high-profile 1989 kidnapping case continues before a designated TADA court in Jammu. The agency has in recent years questioned several accused as part of renewed investigative steps.
Rubaiya Sayeed, 23 at the time and a medical intern at Lala Dev Memorial Women’s Hospital, was abducted on December 8, 1989, while returning home in a minibus. Her father, Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, had just taken office as the Union Home Minister in the V.P. Singh–led Janata Dal government, becoming the first Muslim to hold the post.
Her kidnapping triggered a major national crisis and led to the release of jailed JKLF members at the time.
