The Union Cabinet today approved the initiation of President’s Rule in the Union Territory of Puducherry two day after Chief Minister V Narayanasamy and his council of ministers resigned amidst severe political turmoil.
Narayanasamy’s government fell to minority after MLAs of the Congress, and the DMK resigned. The resignations that had started in January caused the strength of the Puducherry Assembly from 33 to ony 26. The decision to impose President’s Rule in Puducherry was taken after the opposition showed no interest in forming the government.
Narayanasamy had resigned on February 22 before a floor test that was to happen alleging that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was trying to force Hindi upon the people of Puducherry and blamed the Center along with former-Lt. Governor General of Puducherry, Kiran Bedi, for the political crisis that the UT is going through.
After the completion of the floor test, he called up the now Lt Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan and submitted his resignation as the Chief Minister of Puducherry.
Puducherry now awaits its Legislative Assembly elections which are expected to happen in April-May although the dates have not been announced yet.
