A Delhi court on Thursday, Sep 24, 2020 ,sent former JNU student Umar Khalid into judicial custody until October 22 for his alleged involvement in the February violence of North-east Delhi. Delhi police special cell has booked him Under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) .
He was earlier questioned by the unit and on September 1 he wrote to the Commissioner of Police S.N Shrivastava that he was being falsely implicated. Earlier, advocate Prashant Bhusan raising doubts at the investigation had tweeted ” Umar Khalid’s arrest by Delhi Police after naming Yechury, Yogendra Yadav, Jayati Ghosh and Apoorvanand leaves no doubt about the malafied nature of its investigation into Delhi riots. It’s a conspiracy by the police to frame peaceful activists in the guise of investigation. ”
In support of Umar Khalid, student activist Gurmehar Kaur had tweeted the statement he had allegedly made. ” ‘We won’t respond to violence with violence. We won’t respond to hate with hate. If they spread hate, we will respond to it with love. If they thrash us with lathis , we keep holding the tricolor’- UMAR KHALID #freeumarkhalid”
Several activists have come up in support of Umar Khalid and the hashtag #freeumarkhalid has been trending across all major social media platforms.
